Work at Home Independent Contractor or Employee

Employee or Independent Contractor
This is one of the first  decision that you will have to make when you decide that you want to work from home.
Why you may ask?  Because this decision will impact your schedule, your pay, whether or not you have to pay taxes or have them withheld, if you will receive benefits, vacation, sick pay and the  list goes on and on.
Let's look at the pros and cons of both.
As an employee you will usually receive the same benefits that you receive at a brick and mortar job that you are employed at.
They will usually take out taxes for you, offer health benefits (depending on the company) . And you are usually required to work a set schedule often times set by them.
If consistency  in pay is what you are looking for, as well as benefits and you don't want to deal with paying your own taxes.  Then I would suggest you look for a work at home job that will hire you as an employee.
Independent Contractor
As a independent contractor you are usually required to pay your own taxes, they usually don't offer benefits, in most cases you are paid per minute per talk time ( this means you are only paid for the time you are actually on the phone with a customer).
The main benefit of this position is that you usually can set your own schedule.  If flexibility of schedule is what you are looking for you might want to look for a position that will hire you as a independent contractor.
There are some exception to the pay per minute per  talk time.  I worked at Arise and the hire you as a independent contractor but they pay per minute per talk and an hourly rate.
So you have to decide what is best for you.  I have done both and there are pros and cons to each.  So sit down and figure out what you need to accomplish from a work at home job.

Legit or Scam?

We all love going on vacation.  And to me a cruise is the ultimate vacation.  Where else are you going to get: five star dining,  all the food you can eat, entertainment, accommodation, shopping and more all for one price (anything you buy on board is extra and some restaurants are not included)?
In finding an affordable cruise you might look online.  But with so many websites, how do you know which one is legit?
Well I wanted to share one with you.  It is called  I had shopped around and they were the lowest.  It was so much cheaper then the other ones that when I went to pay for it I freaked out and hung up the phone.  I felt like,  here I was turning my credit card over to a strange lady off something that I found online.  I kept thinking that if it sounds to good to be true it is.
So I did some research, I checked with the (Better Business Bureau).  I even called and spoke to a nice lady named Cindy and she assured me that it was legit.  So I wanted  to share the information that I found with you.
To read what I found on the BBB click here.  They have a  A+ rating.  Have you ever heard of  World Travel Holdings well fall under them.   They have been in business since January 1, 1986.  So to have been in business that long they would have to be legit.
Well I went ahead a paid for my cruise in full and we had a wonderful time..  I would definitely recommend checking out their prices before you book your cruise.  We got an ocean view room on Carnival Freedom and a 25.00 shipboard credit. charge us to much for our port charges when we booked our cruise so they refunded it back to us in a another shipboard credit without us knowing anything about it.
I do not work for them nor do I receive any commission from them.  I just wanted to share my experience and hope that it will benefit other families.  If you have any questions about my experience please feel free to leave me a comment and I will try to answer it for you.

Work at Home

Have you ever wondered if working from home, is for you?  We all have dreams of what working from home would entail.  Not having to fight traffic going to and from work, rolling out of bed and working in our pajamams, not having to pay a day care bill, being able to cook and clean our house while we are working.
But are these realistic idea?  I have been working from home for over ten years and I love it, but it is not for everyone.  It is true you don't have to fight traffic, and if you really want to, you can work in your pajamas.  But depending on the job that you have you will probably still have to pay a day care bill.  Most WAH (work at home) companies have a no background noise policy.  And they do audit (listen to your calls).
Most customers service jobs also require you to be at your desk, so you can't be at another part of the house cleaning or cooking.
I love working from home.  But it is not for everyone.  You have to be a self motivated, you have to treat this job as a real job just like you had before you worked from home.  If you are scheduled to work to have to work.
Some people say that working from home is lonely or boring you are just in your home office by yourself.  If you feel like  this make use of the chat room.  Most WAH companies have a chat room destinated just for getting to know your coworkers, they have newsletters where you can send photos of your family, participate in contest, send in recipes etc.. Although this is not the same as physically getting to see your coworkers it does help. I also keep a magazine at my desk and between calls I read that.  I means as mommies how many time do we get to read a magazine.  For great deals on magazines click here.
If you are still not sure if working at home is for you, why not give it a try.  There are many WAH companies that hire people for seasonal work.  This way you can try out, working from home and see if you love it or hate it.

Slow Cooker Meal: Chicken & Dumplings

I am the biggest slow cooker fan. If I didn't have a slow cooker my family probably wouldn't get as many hot meals as they do. With my busy schedule it's hard to do it all. But with my slow cooker I can run around like crazy and still have a hot meal waiting for my family when they get home. I wanted to share another weeks worth of recipes with you.

Not only are these recipes good, but they also save you money. You are not spending money eating out, and when you shop from a grocery list, that saves you money also.

DIY: Homemade Hair Butter & Liquid Washing Powder

I am the most untalented person you would ever want to me. I cannot do anything so when I find something that even I can do I have to share it with my mommies.

So what is it that I have learned that I can do? I can make hair grease from scratch, liquid washing powder, stain removers and etc. So I wanted to share with you some of the Do-it-Yourself (DIY) recipes that I use in my house.

Homemade Hair Butter

1/4 cup Shea Butter
1/4 cup Coconut Oil
3 T Jojoba Oil or Apricot oil
20-30 drops of Sweet Orange Oil

You mix all of the ingredients together. The Shea Butter is hard when you get it, so I soften mine in the microwave. This hair butter really helped my hair to grow. My hair is relaxed but my friends who have natural hair loved this hair butter.

Liquid Washing Powder

1 Bar of Soap ( I use Fels-Naptha)
1 cup Washing Soap
1 cup Borax
Hot Water
Cheese Grater
5 gallon bucket

Pour in 4 cups of water in a large pot. You want the water to get hot but not come to a boil. While the water is boiling, use a cheese grater to grate the soap. Add the grated soap to the water and stir with a wooden spoon until it dissolves. Pour this into your 5 gallon bucket, add your Borax and Washing Soap. Stir until dissolved. Cover and let sit for 24 hours.

This mixture will look clumpy in the morning just stir it real good and it will be fine.

Some people dilute this mixture by filling gallon jugs with have water have detergent. I don't I use about a cup of this per load. You can also add scented oil. But I like the scent just with the ingredients mentioned above.

Now that I am making this I will never go back to buying it.

Bath & Body Works

Dear Mommies,

I just had to share this with you. I am a huge Bath & Body Works Fan. I go every time they have their sales.Which are June and December by the way, and the had a Semi Annual December 26, which I just found out about this year.

If you are a fan like me, then you know the drill. Go to the store to buy your favorite scent, only to find out it is discontinued. So you go around smelling new ones, until you can't smell, anymore.

Well that is exactly what I did. But I found my new scent, one that I would never have thought I would love. It is Wild Madagascar Vanilla. I am not a vanilla fan at all. I would never have even tried had not the sales rep suggested it. She said it is not like your regular vanilla scent, and boy was she right. I love it, love it. So if you are a vanilla person, or like me you're not a vanilla scent person give this one a try.

Please drop me a comment and let me know if you like it or not.

Just for Mommies: Time Saving Tips

Dear Mommies,

If you could add another couple hours in your day?  Would you do it?  I'm not really sure if I would or not.  Because that would mean I would  have to work longer.  So instead of working longer, I just need to make the best use of my time.  So I thought I would share with you some tips that I use to make the best use of my time.

1.  Pick a day to do all your errands: I don't know about you, but I feel like I spend my life running errands.  Only to find out  that I forgot something. And have to run back to the same area I was just at.  So now I do all my errands on one day and I make a list.  I even try to make that list according  to areas.  It is a master list, so if next week I have to run errands I just pull out my master list and put a check next to the ones I need to do today.  And then I cross it off.  I love crossing things off, it gives me such a sense of fulfillment.

Make Ahead Slow Cooker Meals: Beef Recipes

Dear Mommies (and Daddies),

I wanted to share with you another week of Make Ahead Freezer Meals in a Slow Cooker, plus one of my favorites that's not a freezer meal, but one that my family loves. The idea behind this is:

1. Shop for the week
2. Prepare the recipes in gallon freezer bags.
3. Freeze them.
4. Take out a bag from the freezer, the night before.
5. Thaw the bag overnight in the refrigerator.
6. The next morning, empty the contents into the slow cooker to cook all day.
7. Eat and Enjoy.

I thought I would go with a beef theme this week. I just feel I same money if I do a theme. I can buy in bulk and make several recipes. You will see my reference creole seasoning a lot in my recipes. This is my go to seasoning. I usually use this in place of salt. I put it in EVERYTHING. It gives you food such a good flavor. Once you try it I know you will be hooked.

1 1/2 pound of ground beef (I usually use ground turkey, but this is beef week!)
1 onion chopped
1 can of green chilies
1 can of diced tomatoes (I use the ones with the oregano & basil in it)
1 can of tomato sauce
2 cans of kidney beans do not drain
2 cans of pinto beans do not drain
2 T of chili powder
1/2 cup of salsa ( I use hot, but use you prefer)
1/4 cups jalapenos (optional)

Cook the ground beef in a pan. Chop the onions, celery and jalapenos. Add these and the rest of the ingredients to the slow cooker. Pour the beans in there with the liquid. Add your spices. I am a big fan of creole seasonings so I always add a dash. Oh, and a dash or two of hot sauce. Can you tell I like things spicy? Cook on low for about 6-8 hours depending on your slow cooker.I cook everything on low. I turn it on about 6:30am, and I'm back home from picking the kids up at about 3:45pm.

You can also do this recipe by preparing ahead of time and putting in a gallon freezer bag and following the steps above. Chili is usually my Monday meal, so I make it up, put it in a freezer bag, put it in the refrigerator, and then put it in the slow cooker Monday morning.

Beef Stew

1 pound beef stew meat
1 1/2 cup onions chopped
1/2 cup celery chopped
1 1/2 cup carrots chopped
4 cups beef stock or water with bouillon cubes
1 can of tomato sauce
1t salt
1t pepper ( I use red pepper flakes)

1 pound ground beef
2 garlic gloves minced
1 cup water
2 can tomato paste
1 t salt
1 t red pepper flakes
1 t creole seasoning
1 cup of salsa
16 oz of shredded Mexican cheese
1 cup Parmesan cheese

Cook the meat until it is no longer pink. I add all my seasons while my meat is cooking. I mix the tomato paste, water and salsa to make a sauce, add your meat. In your slow cooker put sauce at the bottom of the slow cooker, then a layer of noodles, then the meat sauce, cheese, I usually put some creole season in between my layers. Repeat layer ending with cheese. Cook on low for 4 to 6 hours. You can make the ground beef ahead and mix it with the sauce mixture put it in a gallon bag and freeze. You just have to make sure that it is good and thawed the night before you intend to cook it. If you are going to freeze and make this ahead just take it out 1 day or 2 before. You will be surprised at how good this is.

Taco Soup

1 pound ground beef
1 small onion
1 package of taco seasoning
1 package of  ranch dressing mix
1 can of green chilies
1/2 cup jalapenos (optional)
2 cans of pinto beans
2 cans black beans drained and rinsed
1 can of corn
1/2 garlic powder or minced garlic
2 dashes of hot sauce (optional)
1/2 cup salsa

Beef and Mushrooms

3 pounds beef stew meat
1 can cream of mushrooms soup
2 cans of mushrooms liquid included
1 packet of onion soup mix

Serve over mash potatoes (my favorite) egg noodles or rice.

And now, my favorite meal...

Breakfast Casserole

1 bag of frozen hash brown potatoes
1 pound of sausage
16 oz of Mexican shredded cheese
1/2 onion
1/2 green pepper
6 eggs
1/2 cup of mile
1/2 cup of salsa
2 T creole seasoning
1/4 cup jalapenos (optional)

You cooked your sausage. Spray your slow cooker with cooking spay. Put a layer of potatoes, a layer of sausage (once my meat is down I usually mix my chopped onions and green pepper to save time. You could actually replace the onions and green pepper with the salsa. I've done it a million times and no one could ever tell the difference. A layer of cheese. Repeat layers ending with the cheese. I actually add a few shakes of creole seasoning, salsa and hot sauce between my layers. End with a layer of cheese. Then beat you eggs and milk and pour over the mixture. Cook on low through the night. You will wake up to a wonderful meal. his is also great for when you have company.

Please let me know in your comments which recipes you tried which ones you like and which ones you didn't care for,
